Phenotype hunting is running several plants from the same pack in one room and keeping the individual that matches what you actually need: smell, height, bloom time and how the flower dries. It is not breeding a new strain. It is reading the pack in real conditions.
Even a stable feminized line can throw sisters: one stretches, one stays short, one smells sweet, one smells sharper. A hunt is those plants under the same light and pot size, with notes, not a guess from the first pretty shot.
A phenotype is not the name on the pack
The name is the cross. The phenotype is what that plant showed in your pot. Two seeds from one lot share parents. They do not automatically share height or the same smell in week six of flower.
A tighter line narrows the spread. Six to twelve plants is still enough to see who stretches and who finishes early.
Why the first plant is a weak sample
The fastest plant can be the flattest on aroma. The heaviest can be the one that will not dry in the core. Without sisters in the same run, one result becomes “the strain.”
The hunt is a cut you keep: clone the winner, or buy the same line again knowing what to look for. No clone still pays if the cup is numbered and the notebook exists.
How to start in a real tent
Same mix, same lamp, same pot size, same calendar. A plant on a cold edge and a plant in the hot center is not a genetic test.
Number cups on the day they open. Log open date, first pistils, height in week three of flower, stem rub, bud density and whether the core stays wet at lights-on.
Run only what the room can finish. Six plants watched to the jar beat twenty left in the back row.
Photoperiod and auto in the same hunt idea
Photoperiod gives veg time to read structure. If the plan is a clone, that is the classic path: pick in flower, take a cut.
Autos do not wait on a long veg. The hunt still shows the spread — who stays short, who stretches, who finishes first — but a clone is rarely the goal. It tells you if that line comes back.
The Amnesia Haze feminized is a longer sativa-leaning line where hunts often show height and finish-time gaps. The Gelato 41 feminized is useful for comparing bud density and aroma in a Cali-style pack. The Cookies Autoflower is the short hunt: several autos from one line, seed to chop, same cycle.
What to write down
Not “good” or “bad.” Height, internodes, leaf colour, first pistil date, smell in week five and week eight, whether the bud dries, whether it drank more than its sisters.
After chop, smell again after a week of dry. A lot of hunts die here: loud on the plant, flat in the jar — or the other way around.
How to pick the keeper
Three priorities before you soak seed. Examples: fits the ceiling, finishes before the damp stretch, citrus smell, flower that dries. No list, and the tallest or the frostiest photo wins by default.
Cull early for broken structure or a bud that will not dry. Do not cull in week two for looking plain. Smell and density decide late.
What ruins the test
Mixed pot sizes. A lamp swap mid-run. Cold edge versus hot centre. No notes. Ten strains at once and no idea which pack filled which cup.
A clean hunt is one variety, several seeds, one environment.
